Our elementary classrooms are a unique and stimulating learning experience very appropriate to our environment. It is comprised of early elementary and upper elementary with curriculum that is individualized to each student’s needs. We do not practice ‘one size fits all’ learning, our belief being that the needs of individual students are different, and thus, must be differently addressed. This philosophy places an emphasis on the students’ role in the learning experience, allowing them to engage at their own level and in their own time. They embrace the challenge of meeting their individual goals.
Our mornings start outside taking time to be in nature and wake up our bodies before we enter the classroom. After morning meeting, students work in their chosen centers where our diverse learners thrive with materials and activities geared for exploring and developing skills at all levels. This time is helpful in developing independence and decision making. After centers, students choose work from their learning plans for the remainder of the morning. The students know they have to get their work done by the end of the day. This helps students learn to manage their time, as well as help them learn to be independent.
Along with academic development, we also provide opportunity for creative pursuits. The students have weekly art and music classes along with Friday afternoons exploring the woods. We promote emotional development through group discussion, peer cooperation and journaling. Helping a child develop the skills of personal reflection supports their ability to “read” others’ emotions and interact positively, in order to form both peer and teacher-student relationships, paramount to becoming successful humans.
